A car can look perfect in the showroom and still be wrong for the guest who has to sit in it. After more than twenty years of running one of Cape Town's most exclusive luxury chauffeur services, the first thing I want to know about any new car is whether it best serves the VIP passengers we drive. Every vehicle in the SOHO VIP fleet is there because a particular kind of guest needed it, and I learned about that need on the road long before I signed for the car.
The questions that drive how I choose my chauffeur fleet
I ask four questions before any vehicle joins the SOHO VIP fleet. This filter helped me build an award-winning luxury chauffeur service that clients keep coming back to.
Does it meet my guests’ needs?
Every journey and travel group is different, so a true luxury fleet needs a variety that fits each purpose. A CEO with three meetings in the CBD and a flight at six needs something very distinct from a family arriving for two weeks on the Garden Route. I understand my guests' varied requirements and buy vehicles with real people in mind.
For executives, I chose the Mercedes-Benz V-Class – not only for its comfort and prestige but because it doubles up as a boardroom. The rear seats can face each other, allowing four people to sit knee to knee and settle a deal between the airport and the Atlantic Seaboard.
Long-haul guests arriving at Cape Town International need the opposite. After eleven hours in the air, they want to stretch out comfortably in a quiet, climate-controlled space. That is why we run long-wheelbase cars with advanced suspension like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Range Rover Autobiography. The extra rear legroom and the softer ride offer the sanctuary our tired VIPs need.
And for families who want to stick together on a road trip through the Western Cape while enjoying superior comfort, the Toyota Quantum VX Premier offers reclining captain's chairs with leg rests to eight passengers.
I look at a car and think: who will sit here, and will it give them the best possible experience on their specific journey?
Can it protect a guest without drawing attention?
Some of our guests are diplomats, public figures, or families who would rather not be recognised. For them, protection on the road is vital. But a car covered in armour and blacked-out glass shouts to everyone on the street that someone important is inside – the exact thing they are trying to avoid.
So, we use the BMW X5 Protection VR6. BMW builds the protection in at the factory rather than bolting it on afterwards, and to anyone glancing at it in traffic, it looks like an ordinary X5. It gracefully drives like one too, on a city street or on the long coastal roads out towards George. Our guests get the protection. Nobody else gets a clue.
Does it meet global standards?
A large share of our guests come from the UAE and the wider Arab world, with others from Europe and Asia. Prestige means something slightly different to varied VIPs, and the fleet has to reflect that.
The Mercedes G-Class is a good example. Few cars carry the same presence, and it is a favourite with international royalty and entertainment icons. For many of our Gulf guests, it is a familiar sight outside the best addresses at home, and having one waiting for them in Cape Town feels like being met by someone who understands them.
At the same time, more of our corporate clients now report on their travel carbon footprint. That is part of why the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS is in the fleet. It’s almost silent at speed with a near-frictionless glide, enabling a company to send its leadership in modern luxury without undoing its own sustainability targets.
Can our chauffeurs drive it properly?
The best car in the world is wasted on someone who doesn’t understand it.
An armoured X5 carries far more weight than a standard one. It brakes and corners differently, and a chauffeur needs to experience that before a guest ever does. That is why every car we buy is matched to our in-house chauffeur training.
But even a highly competent driver with a pristine car can sabotage a client's luxury experience if they lack the quieter professional skills that make or break a premier chauffeur service. Therefore, we teach that, too.
Our team learns defensive and tactical driving and route planning alongside proper etiquette. They can take the bends on Chapman's Peak so smoothly that a guest's phone call carries on uninterrupted, and they know when a passenger wants conversation and when they want to be left alone. When plans change, they know how to pivot without making it the client’s problem.
I don't hire drivers. I mould elite local chauffeuring specialists.
What the fleet has to earn
A car joins the SOHO VIP fleet when it does a specific job for a specific guest, keeps them safe without fuss, and meets global expectations for cutting-edge mechanical performance, comfort, prestige, and sustainability. And it always stays in the hands of a chauffeur who knows how to handle it.
If you are planning a visit and aren't sure which car suits your journey, tell us who is travelling and what your days look like. We will recommend a vehicle from our carefully selected fleet.
